We're Recruiting!

Mechanical Design Engineer, Johnstone, Scotland.

Horne Engineering Ltd is a thriving 3rd generation family-owned business established in 1909. Based on one site in Johnstone, Renfrewshire, we carry out the design, assembly, testing and worldwide-sale of our own range of thermostatic control valves for water, steam and gas.  Recently we have further extended our range into the manufacture of specialised taps, showers and disinfection devices for institutional premises, primarily for the UK healthcare market. Our recent projects include the new Queen Elizabeth University Hospital in Glasgow.

We are seeking a mechanical design engineer to join our small team of two professional engineers (supported by two technicians) engaged in the research, development and design of new products; and also maintaining and improving the production facility for the existing product range.

Due to the small size of the company this role is very hands-on. The successful applicant will be engaged in the design of new products as well as supervising all aspects of the manufacture and testing of prototypes. Essential parts of the role will include activities such as product testing; assessment of competitors’ products; analysis of test data; and identification/implementation of product improvements. This will require a measure of creativity whilst simultaneously maintaining a tenacious grip of sound engineering principles and practice. A certain amount of attention will also be required in management of the supply chain. Excellent spoken English and flexible communication skills are essential as interfacing with suppliers and customers of various backgrounds from architects to plumbers will be required.

The successful candidate will have a good degree in mechanical engineering; have gained, or be working towards, IMechE Chartered Engineer status; and have at minimum 5 years experience in a role involving product-design, project management, and designing and supervising batch-manufacturing processes. Your experience must have included regular use of a professional-grade 3D CAD system such as Solidworks, which we use. The design department also has a legacy AutoCAD system.

Additionally, the applicant should have a working knowledge of modern manufacturing processes such as casting, forging, injection-moulding, extrusion, laser-cutting & etching, electro-plating & spray-finishing; as well as rapid-prototyping techniques and modern measurement equipment including CMM. Some electronics and/or computer programming experience would also be helpful, as would experience of managing type-approvals or a similar compliance framework.

Horne is a small and friendly team with excellent employee retention: therefore it is essential that the successful candidate is a versatile worker and a good team player.
