Anti-scald
taps law by 2006.
The Guardian, Wednesday 7 January 2004.
Measures
to prevent scalding accidents caused by tap water were announced
yesterday by the government.
Some
600 people every year are seriously scalded by bath water. Old people
and children are particularly vulnerable because their skin is thinner.
Under
rules proposed by the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister, from
2006, all new homes would have a safety device fitted to hand basins,
showers and baths. This would regulate water temperature and ensure
that it does not rise to a dangerous level.
A spokesman
for the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents welcomed the
move. "This is something that has been worrying many people,
and somethingwe have been urging for some time," she said.
"We
hope that builders will start to introduce these measures even before
they become official, so we can stop as many children as possible
being seriously hurt."
