Scalding
Legislation Thank You. The Evening Telegraph, 19 April 2006
A
Monifieth father today presented a certificate of thanks to the
Scottish Parliament for ensuring all bath taps will be fitted
with anti-scalding valves in new and refurbished homes, writes
Graeme Strachan.
From
July 2006 all new and renovated properties must have £80 thermostatic
valves fitted to their hot water systems to ensure water does
not exceed 43 degrees centigrade.
Alan
Masterton, whose three-year-old daughter Nicole died after a bonfire
accident, presented the petition to MSPs last year on behalf of
children’s charity The Scottish Burned Children’s Club.
The
petition was a joint document between the club and 17-year-old
Darren Ferguson, who was six months old when he was burned in
an accident with bath water. He has had 59 operations to repair
burns to his face and chest. Dundee University rector Lorraine
Kelly also signed the petition.
MSPs
passed the petition and Mr Masterton today presented the certificate
of thanks to the petitions committee in the garden room of the
Scottish Parliament. “The certificate is to thank the committee
for their assistance in getting our petition to legislation,”
he said. “From July 2006 all new homes being built will require
to have TMV valves fitted to the baths and therefore reducing
to nil eventually the number of children badly scalded in Scotland
in baths in their homes. “It’s a monumental decision and a good
example of democracy in action.” Every year in the UK more than
430 children under the age of five are admitted to hospital with
severe scalds caused by bath water.
