Burns
charity hands petition to MSPs.
The Courier, 28 October 2004.
The
Monifieth father of a young burns victim yesterday presented the
MSPs at Holyrood a petition calling for the fitting of safety thermostats
to baths in Scotland.
Alan
Masterton, whose three-year-old daughter, Nicole, died after a bonfire
accident, presented the petition on behalf of a children's charity
in the Scottish Parliament.
Mr
Masterton is a member of the Scottish
Burned Children's Club, which helps in the rehabilitation of
children who have sustained burn and scald injuries.
A petition
calling for the fitting of safety themostats to baths in Scotland
to reduce the incidence of scald injuries has gained the support
of Dundee University Rector Lorraine Kelly.
Every
year in the UK more than 430 children under the age of five are
admitted to hospital with severe scalds caused by bath water.
Mr
Masterson presented the petition to the convenor of the petitions
committee with 17-year-old Darren Ferguson, who was six months old
when he was burned in an accident with bath water.
The
Falkirk teenager has had 59 operations to repair burns to his face
and chest.
The
petition was signed by over 500 people.
Mr
Masterson said, "We have received support from various fire
services throughout Scotland, schools, child welfare organisations,
television and radio personalities, and the Scottish manufacturer
of the TMV valves has provided us with literature and a mock-up
valve to show the politicians in Holyrood how simple and inexpensive
this safety device is."
"The
convener of the petitions committee (Michael McMahon MSP) confirmed
to me that the committee were looking to this petition as an important
case and thus have appointed a date of November 24, 2004 as the
date for our evidence to be heard before the committee at Holyrood."
The
valve fits under the bath and goes into the plumbing system.
It
uses cold water to cool the hot water to a temperature hot enough
to bathe in, but not hot enough to scald a child, even if the child
came under the full flow of the hot tap.
"We
have been disappointed with the lack fo support from GPs in Scotland",
added Mr Masterson.
"Last
week we faxed our information sheet to 200 surgeries throughout
Scotland and to date have received only seven support letters back
from them."
"We
still need people to send us their support, we will take further
letters with us when we are asked to give evidence at the committee.
"People
can log onto www.theburnsclub.org.uk and fill in and submit online
or they can download and fax to me on 01382 805037 at any time."
Although
legislation on the fitting of safety thermostats on baths ins scheduled
for the rest of the UK, the Scottish Executive has "no immediate
plans" for such a law.
The
petition is a joint document between the Scottish Burned Children's
Club and Darren Ferguson.
Darren
is challenging Scottish ministers to look him in the face and say
legislation can wait.
The
Scottish Burned Children's Club organises adventure camps for young
burns victims where they share experiences and build confidence.
The
legislation being driven outwith Scotland will force house builders
to install safety bath thermostats by 2006.
Scalds
can destroy blood vessels, leaving surgeons no choice but to amputate
toes and fingers. |
