New Water Heat Safety Valves Laws. BBC News, 30 April 2006
New safety measures aimed at cutting bath time scalding injuries
to children have been introduced.
All
new and refurbished properties in Scotland must now have a thermostatic
valve fitted to the hot water system.
The
new building standards will ensure that water from a bath or bidet
will not exceed 48°C.
The
regulation was passed at Holyrood after a petition was submitted
by childhood burns victim Darren Ferguson, 17, from Stenhousemuir
near Falkirk.
He
urged ministers to ensure the valves, which cost about £80,
were installed.
The
youngster has undergone 59 major operations, numerous minor operations
and laser surgery since being scalded on the face and chest by bath
water when he was six-months-old.
Scotland
is the first part of the UK to introduce this kind of regulation.
'Practical
solution' A
Labour MP has tabled a private members' bill at Westminster calling
for the law to be introduced in England.
Deputy
Communities Minister Johann Lamont said: "Scalding happens
every day, with very young and older people being particularly at
risk. It can happen in a matter of seconds.
"While
there are simple precautions that everyone can take, there is a
practical solution which can help prevent this - fitting a thermostatic
valve.
"From
today, all new and refurbished bathrooms should have these valves
fitted, which will make our homes safer and help stop unnecessary
injuries."
Sarah
Colles, home safety adviser for the Royal Society for the Prevention
of Accidents, said: "Every year scalding from hot water in
baths affects hundreds of people.
"RoSPA
fully supports the changes made in Scotland, and we have no doubt
this will help reduce the number of scalding injuries which can
lead to terrible pain and suffering." |
